In 2019, Michigan experienced more car accidents than in 2018.

This statistic speaks of how car accidents in Michigan and in the U.S. as a whole are increasing. Lives are lost.

From 2013 to 2017, car accidents increased by 12.3 percent in the U.S. These statistics also speak of how accidents, not only in Michigan, continue to seemingly increase year after year.

What can be done to prevent more accidents?

Looking at the 7 most common types of car accidents in the U.S. can offer some insight into why accidents occur and how you can potentially avoid a life-threatening accident.

1. Rear-End Collision

A rear-end collision can be caused by distracted driving, brake failure, or following too closely to another car. Rear-end collision is the most common type of car accident and can be minor or fatal.

These rear-end collisions are often during lots of traffic when cars are bumper to bumper.

If you’re unsure of who’s at fault in these kinds of accidents, you can read our blog post on how to determine fault in a car accident.

2. T-Bone Accidents

These kinds of accidents occur when a car strikes another car going perpendicular to them.

They can also be fatal. They often result from a driver rushing through a red light or blowing through a stop sign.

3. Single Vehicle Crashes

This kind of car accident results when a car takes a turn too fast or hydroplanes, resulting in their car spinning out of control or tumbling and crashing.

4. Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions are more common than you might think. They result from cars going the wrong way in traffic.

Another common reason that it happens is that cars pass incorrectly in a two-way lane. These kinds of accidents are often fatal because of the direct impact going head-to-head.

5. Low-Speed Contact Collisions

This is another common type of accident that often happens during traffic or around your local city. It typically is when a car hits another vehicle traveling slower than 15 MPH.

6. Changing Lanes Accidents

Do you ever have a blind spot in your rearview mirror? The good news is that everyone has a blind spot, which can lead to changing lanes and side-swiping another vehicle.

This is why some vehicles have an additional mirror on their side-view mirror.

7. Multi-Vehicle Pileup

This kind of accident is often found in traffic on highways or freeways. It happens when multiple vehicles hit one car after another because they do not have enough time to slow to prevent the accident.

These types of car accidents can be fatal and avoided by keeping a proper distance when in traffic.

These Types of Car Accidents Can Happen to Anyone

It’s important to recognize that these car accidents can happen to anyone. Nobody is the exception.

You can, however, avoid these types of car accidents by being more aware of why they are so common and being a more conscious driver.
