Michiganders are notoriously known for their aggressive driving, especially on some of our busiest roads. Visitors to metro Detroit are stunned by Michigan’s drivers and their, ahem, assertive driving.

No Surprises With Accident Data
It will come as no surprise to anyone who drives on the busy Michigan roads that a majority of the accidents happen on highways with speed limits of 70mph.
Accidents are most likely on Fridays and Mondays and between peak rush hour times. In 2017, Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties had a combined total of 256 fatal accidents
That number is outlandishly higher when you factor in non-fatal accidents.
Where the Accidents Are Happening
If you are a driver in southeast Michigan, it also won’t come as a surprise that certain intersections have a much higher rate of accidents.

Eastbound I-696 between Bermuda Mohawk and Campbell Hilton
This is about one-half mile of roadway from I-75 to Woodward Avenue. It is heavily traveled and has had recent construction.
Southbound I-75 between 14 Mile Road exit ramp and 14 Mile Road overpass, Troy
As travelers head south into Detroit, this is always a spot where traffic backs up and comes to a screeching halt. The large mall and heavy commercial district at off the 14 Mile Road exit ramps only add to the congestion and potential for accidents.
Southbound I-75 between 11 Mile Road exit ramp and 11 Mile Road overpass, Royal Oak
Just past another heavy commercial zone at 12 Mile Road with many cars entering I-75, this is another hot spot along this route.
This is also very close to the I-696 mixing bowl exits where cars are maneuvering to make lane changes to get to their exit.
Telegraph Road and 12 Mile Road, Southfield
In addition to heavy commercial and business areas, this intersection comes just before the entrances to two major throughways.
Drivers are jockeying to get to their lane to enter either Northwestern Highway or I-696. There are also many business entrances leading up to the section of ramps where drivers are slowing to turn in or drivers are pulling out into traffic.
Orchard Lake Road and 14 Mile Road, Farmington Hills
This intersection is also complicated by nearby Northwestern Highway merging onto Orchard Lake Road. This area is heavy with business, commercial and residential drivers are changing lanes and making turns.
Michigan’s Most Dangerous Roads
Michigan roads, especially in southeast Michigan’s Oakland County, can be difficult to navigate safely. If traffic makes you nervous, these roads will definitely have your heart racing.
